In July 2007, the Government of Turkey, in collaboration with the United Nations Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States (UN-OHRLLS) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), organized in Istanbul the United Nations Ministerial Conference of the Least Developed Countries, “Making Globalization Work for the LDCs”.
At the Conference Turkey announced the establishment of a 15 million USD Trust Fund for LDCs, LLDCs and SIDS and a 5 million USD Trust Fund for LDCs. In addition, Turkey pledged 1 million USD for the Enhanced Integrated Framework (EIF), to assist LDCs in addressing their supply-side constraints and integrating trade in their national development plans.
The 5 million USD Turkish Trust Fund for LDCs aims to support their efforts to achieve the MDGs through funding small- and medium-size development projects in the following areas:
1) Water
2) Sanitation
3) Education, including vocational
4) Health, including maternal
5) Information and communication technologies (ICT)
6) Agriculture, including irrigation
7) Physical infrastructure
8) Entrepreneurship, including women’s entrepreneurship
9) Humanitarian assistance
All LDCs are eligible for funding from the Turkish Trust Fund. Applications for funding of small and medium development projects in LDCs must be submitted to the Turkish International Cooperation and Development Agency (TIKA) Headquarters in Ankara or the Permanent Mission of Turkey to the United Nations or to the nearest Turkish diplomatic mission (embassy/consulate).
