Session 1: The New Africa - Where are we now and where are we going?

1. Presentation of Global Coalition paper/policy analysis in UNCTAD’s LDC Report and Economic Development in Africa Report.
2. Discussion: What’s new? What are the key emerging trends?

Tuesday Afternoon

Session 2: National Policies - Building on, and spreading, success.

1. Economic development and the MDGs: getting the balance right
2. The importance of diversification and structural transformation
3. Governance and policy space: from poverty reduction strategies to development strategies

Session 3: International Policies – systemic issues, international commitments, new approaches.

1. Fulfillment of the commitments: doubling aid from 2004 to 2010; debt write-off; new aid practices (Paris Declaration). Are promises being met?
2. Stalled progress on commodities and international trade: Where do we stand? Where can we go? Are there new approaches?
3. Emerging new systemic issues: (i) technology and IPRs, (ii) migration, and (iii) climate change.

Session 4: South-South Cooperation

1. Africa – new forms of regional cooperation (e.g. infrastructure development corridors, STI, intra-African flying geese between North Africa and SSA)
