Unlocking Central Asia trade and transport
Central Asia faces a number of transport challenges both geographical and political, from a lack of sea access to complex customs procedures. Efficient transit transport systems would contribute to economic growth, which in turn would increase regional stability and security.
To help achieve this goal, OSCE has organized a high-level conference aimed at strengthening political co-operation on developing transit transportation in and through the region. The conference takes place on 23-24 October 2007 in Dushanbe, Tajikistan and is organized by the OSCE Secretariat, in close co-operation with the United Nations Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and the Small Island Developing States (UN-OHRLLS), and with the support of the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan.
The conference, which will assess the prospects for developing trans-Asian and Eurasian transit transportation through Central Asia until the year 2015, will bring together high-level representatives of the relevant ministries and government agencies as well as experts from international and regional organizations. In addition, it will help promote increased co-operation between the public and private sectors in managing transit transport related issues.
Moreover, the conference will provide an opportunity to review progress made in the implementation of the 2003 UN-endorsed Almaty Programme of Action, which focuses on the needs of landlocked developing countries.
