General Assembly in the draft resolution A/C.2/57/L.32 requested the Secretary-General of the Conference, in close cooperation with the regional commissions, to organize intergovernmental regional and subregional meetings, where applicable, and decided that these regional and subregional meetings should finalize their work at the latest by April 2003 in order to make substantive contribution to the work of the intergovernmental preparatory process.
The regional commissions thus play a leading role in the preparation and organization of the sub-regional/regional meetings, in close cooperation with OHRLLS, UNCTAD and the World Bank. These meetings are expected to adopt the sub-regional/regional plan of action and deliverables. There will be three regional meetings.
1. The Regional Preparatory Meeting of Africa, (East-Central Africa, West-Central Africa, Southern Africa), to be held in 5-7 May 2003 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
2. The Regional Preparatory Meeting of Asia, (Central Asia, South Asia, North East Asia, South East Asia), to be held in 22- 23 April 2003 in Bangkok. Thailand. (Link to UNESCAP)
