Envoy Addresses Civil Society In Ethopia

14 June 2012

Permanent Representative of Nepal to the United Nations in Geneva, Shanker D Bairagi today, addressed the opening session of the Africa Least Developed Countries Civil Society Regional Strategy Assembly in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Bairagi, representing Nepal in the Global Coordinator of the Group of LDCs, lauded the important role played by civil society in advancing the LDC agenda.

He emphasised that civil society should serve as a vital and proactive force in debating, campaigning, lobbying and advocating the implementation of the Istanbul Programme of Action, said a statement issued by the mission.

The envoy stated that the Least Developed Countries were characterised by multiple constraints such as low per capita income, low level of human development and vulnerability to external shocks.

Stating that the much-needed structural transformation of Least Developed Countries has remained very limited so far, the envoy stated that the time has come to think out of the box.
