On 27 October, 2011, UN-OHRLLS convened a Special Event titled: The SIDS Tourism, Biodiversity and Culture Nexus in the Context of the Green Economy at UN Headquarters in New York. 

 

The event was chaired by the High Representative for LDCs, LLDCs and SIDS, Mr. Chieck Sidi Diarra, and featured a presentation by the Secretary-General of the UN world Tourism Organization (UNWTO), Mr. Taleb Rifai. 

 

The chair of the AOSIS, H.E Ambassador Dessima Williams Permanent Representative of the Mission of Grenada, delivered some remarks at the opening of the event on behalf of the group. 

 

Following these statements and presentation there was an exchange of views by participants which included statements, comments and questions. The objective of the Special was two fold: 1. to contribute to the ongoing discussions in the Second Committee on Sustainable Development of SIDS and; 2. contribute to the ongoing dialogue in the lead-up preparations to Rio+20.
