High Representative welcomes Government of India donation to Fourth UN Conference on the Least Developed Countries
24 June 2010
New York: UN Under Secretary-General and High Representative for the Least Developed Countries (LDC), Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States, Mr. Cheick Sidi Diarra on Wednesday applauded the Government of India for its contribution to the upcoming Fourth United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries, scheduled to take place in Istanbul, Turkey, in 2011.
India donated US $ 250,000 towards the travel of LDC representatives to the Conference, which is expected to draw some 6,000 participants, including Heads of State and Government, parliamentarians, key private sector players and civil society. The five-day global gathering is a major undertaking of the United Nations and a significant event on the international organization's calendar in 2011.
“This generous contribution is indeed timely, and will undoubtedly contribute to the successful staging of the Conference next year. Given the challenge of organizing a meeting of this scale in these tough economic times, the donation from the Government of India is even more heartening. It also serves as a strong signal of India's commitment to the fundamental principles underlying South-South cooperation,” Mr. Diarra said.
Formally handing over the cheque with the donation on Wednesday, Ambassador Hardeep S. Puri, Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations stressed that the Conference is an important and pivotal event in the socio-economic international agenda, and is likely to inform and shape the development debate in years to come.
"The LDC agenda should not be seen as the concern only of the group of 49 countries which fall into this category. Given our increasing political and economic interdependence, it is an agenda that affects all Member States on a variety of levels. As such, it is incumbent upon all of us to step up to the plate and support the upcoming Conference,” Ambassador Puri said.
Mr. Diarra echoed the sentiment saying that it was important that other countries followed suit and provided the much needed support to the LDCs, “so that a prosperous future becomes a reality for all and not just a few”.
